In our tool for independent online e-bike buying advice, there is a category recommendation “E-MTB Fullys” as a quick evaluation for a score of 500 to 800 points.
What do we mean by E-MTB Fullys?
E-MTB Fullys are full-suspension e-mountain bikes. They are usually designed as sports equipment and not as everyday vehicles. The suspension in the front comes with 120 to 180mm of travel, depending on the E-MTB Fully game, and 100 to 150mm in the rear.
Sometimes full-suspension e-trekking bikes are offered with luggage and light equipment – these are basically e-fullys as SUV e-bikes. They’re not built for sport with climbing and trail descents, but for comfortable e-trekking / e-touring riding and everyday use.
The wheel sizes on e-fully bikes are predominantly 27.5 inches front and rear, increasingly also 29 inches front only (called Mullet Mix) and 29 inches on both wheels.
The mid-mounted motors in higher-quality E-MTB Fullys usually come from the market-dominating manufacturers Bosch, Brose, Giant/Yamaha or Shimano with torques of 70 to 90 Nm. Meanwhile, there is a motor upper class (better torque upper class) with 115 Nm (Sachs RS) or 120 Nm (TQ) torque.
In terms of tires, mostly off-road studded tires with good grip and widths of 2.4 to 2.6 inches are mounted.
Most e-bikes in the e-fully category come without a luggage rack and without a light system that complies with traffic regulations. E-MTB Fully are just sports equipment and not everyday bikes. For quick flexibility in the terrain are usually equipped with a Vario seatpost (remote) that can be lowered from the handlebars.
Special full-suspension e-bikes include SUV e-fullys, as mentioned above, and the fairly new category of light e-MTBs, some of which position themselves as touring e-fullys.
What are the requirements for e-fullys?
This result “E-MTB Fully mid-motor e-bikes” usually results from the following requirements selected in the buying guide:
- I want to let off steam in a sporty way, possibly also in a bike park, discover more of my surroundings and go on day tours
Attention: For day tours with luggage, the “Permissible total weight” of the e-bike should be taken into account
- Frame type: Full suspension (E-Fully /or SUV e-bike)
- With the weight specifications, everything is there – from light to heavier weight is okay.
- How steep can it be for you: Mostly 5-10 on a scale of 1 to 10 (1=flat; 10=very steep).
- Strength/endurance/coordination: Values from 3 on the scale 1 to 10 (1=very little; 10=very much)
- Budgets were given as values from €1,000 to €6,000, in each case with a €500 margin

Gear and gradient
At least 10-speed gears (chain) is advisable, if the gradient specification in the purchase advice tool is from 5 upwards, from 8 even rather a 12-speed gear. Hub gears are not recommended here. Most e-fullys are equipped with Shimano or SRAM gears. At higher rider weight and from 5s gradient specification, I would recommend the 12-speed chain.
Range / battery capacity
A range from 630 Wh battery can be sufficient for steep uphills even times only for 35 kilometers.ausreichen – depending on how steep inclines are included, how the ground is and how heavy the / the driver:in is. Alternatively, choose a second battery in the backpack or an e-fully with an option for a range extender (additional battery).
Permissible total weight / weight for tours
The total weight of e-bike plus rider plus clothing, helmet, backpack or panniers, lock and possibly second battery, and charger can quickly go towards 120 kilograms and much more
Not all manufacturers offer “Permissible total weights” of over 120 kilograms. This factor goes into our evaluation. For “E-trekking / E-touring mid-motor e-bikes”, the tare weight of the pedelec is usually around 25 to 27 kilograms, so that only 95 to 97 kilograms remain for the “rest” at 120 kilograms permissible total weight.
Do you actually have to see the weight specification so narrowly? My advice is: yes. See also our article XXL bikes – A search.
What we do not recommend
general, we do not recommend mid-motor e-bikes for e-trekking / e-touring
- E-bikes with luggage carrier battery, especially because of the load on the back when touring
- E-bikes with battery between seat tube and rear wheel, too long (usually over 2 meters), not maneuverable
- E-bikes with front wheel hub motor
